NATIONAL PARKS

There are many different types of landscape in California so there are also a loz of diefferent national parks, where you can admire the beauty of California´s nature. We picked out only three of the most famous parks to give you some information about them: Joshua Tree National Monument, Redwood National Park and Yosemite Park.

Joshua Tree National Monument

Joshua Tree National Monument is a 540 square mile area of forest with green yucca trees known as the Joshua trees. The Johua trees are a type of yucca palm. They have thick trunks, pointed leaves, and long, hanging green and white flowers. These strange facing the nearby granite cliffs create a gascinating surrealistic atmosphere. Around 1840,a passing group of Mormons gave the trees their name because they thought the branches looked like the raised arms of their prophet, Joseph, pointing the way West.

Josua Tree National Monument has been a nature reserve since 1936 and a sanctuary for many rare plants and trees. It is a two-hour drive from Los Angeles.

Redwood National Park

Redwood National Park, founded in 1968, is one of the most famous parks in California. It consists of three Valifornia State Parks and is situated in the very nothrwest Of the Golden State, at the border with Oregon. At a distance of 330 miles from San Francisco, it is a secluded place far away from the busy Californian life. It covers an area of about 425 square miles and it owes ist name to the most famous tree which grows there: the giant redwood. 155 square miles of the park´s area are considered to be 'old growth', which means that the trees found in these parts are at least 400 years old.

As a unique nature reserve, Redwood National Park enjoys a worldwide reputation.

Yosemite Park

Yosemite Park, founded in 1890, is situated in the Sierra Nevada, about 59 miles from Fresno in eastern California. It is a 744 square mile wilderness with giant trees, some with trunks as wide as a dual carriageway. The biggest is a sequoia, a relative of the redwood, called “Grizzly Giant“ : 300 years old and about 70 yards (~63,98m) tall. Steep granite cliffs rise to an impressive 1066 yards (~974,33m) around the park which also features Yosemite Falls, the highest waterfall in North America and the second highest in the world. As for wildlife, 220 kinds of reptiles have been identified.

Visitors can use a free bus service which takes them to the most interesting places in the park.
